France and Italy team up to keep dumping charges against Egypt
Egypt-European Union, Economics, 8/15/1998
The crisis between Egypt and the countries of the European Union escalated yesterday due to the threat of further dumping fees against Egyptian textile exports.
Egyptian communications with EU countries revealed that France and Italy are heading a front to impose sanctions on Egypt at the meeting of the European ministerial committee in the middle of the coming month.
The two countries are exerting intensive efforts to organize the countries to side against Egypt and to vote on imposing dumping fees of 20.6% for 5 years.
Abdul Hakim Hagag, the head of the holding company for Egyptian textiles, referred yesterday to the reduction of Egyptian textile exports by an average of 50% due to the temporary fees currently imposed.
Europe and Egypt are undergoing discussions regarding charges by Europe of textile dumping (selling bellow cost) by Egypt, where textile is an important export commodity.
