Asilah most appropriate venue for African writers' club
North Africa, Culture, 8/12/1998
The first Congress of African Writers held here August 8-9 which called for the setting up of a club of African writers deemed that the city of Asilah is the most appropriate venue for such premisses, said the congress commissioner, Henri Lopes.
In a message of thanks to King Hassan II at the end of the congressional proceedings, Henri Lopes said the African writers' club would be a kind of Medicis villa on African land.
The projected club is designed to be a permanent encounter center for African intellectuals to promote African literary works in Africa and across the world through the setting up of distribution networks and the development of Internet sites to facilitate cultural exchanges between African countries.
The translation of African literary works and the holding of seminars and round-tables on african literature are also part of the club's tasks.
The first Congress of African Writers, held as part of the 20th Asilah festival that runs from August 7 to 21 in this northern Moroccan costal city, was attended by some sixty writers from almost all African states. It was sponsored by the Asilah Forum Foundation, in cooperation with UNESCO and the Union of Afro-Asian Writers.
