Iranian Interior Ministry says elections of municipal council will be held
Iran, Politics, 8/11/1998
Iranian Interior Minister Abdolvahed Mousavi Lari confirmed that an item in the constitution -- which was halted long ago -- will be implemented before the end of March 1999, specifying the election of municipal councils.
Lari also said that the Iranian people will directly participate in choosing the officials who will be supported by the people's voices, confirming that his ministry, which is responsible for supervising the elections, has prepared for these elections.
Analysts expect that candidates aligned with President Khatami will receive strong support, due to his comprehensive program of political and social reform and to enhance the president in confronting the conservatives.
The Iranian President has sought to implement and give respect to the country's constitution by affirming its primacy and the need to respect the rule of law and using the constitution's provisions as a tool in his fight against his conservative foes.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi has appointed his young nephew Sadiq Kharazi as his deputy.
Sadek Kharazy, was the minister's advisor and an executive official in the Islamic summit held in Tehran on December of last year.
