El-Baz: Israeli - Syrian negotiations should resume
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 8/11/1998
President Mubarak's political advisor, Osama el-Baz, has asserted the need to resume negotiations on the Syrian track from the point at which they stopped and the need to carry out all obligations providing for a full Israeli withdrawal from Syria's occupied Golan.
In a meeting with youths representing Egyptian universities on Monday, el-Baz added that Syria seeks just and comprehensive peace built on the Madrid terms of reference and UN resolutions.
He stressed that negotiations cannot be started from zero point, and he held Israel responsible for obstructing the peace process and warned against the dangers inflicted as a result of the Israeli policy against the region's security and stability.
He reiterated Egypt's call to eliminate Israeli nuclear weapons and free the region from mass-annihilation weapons.
El-Baz said that the peace process in the Middle East is stumbling, that the possibilities for an advanced positive development is weaker than before and that this will lead to serious consequences for all parties, including Israel.
He called for other alternative ways to advance the process, among which is the French - Egyptian initiative and to stick to the Oslo accords.
