Saudi Arabia, Kuwait reservations over Iraqi demand
Regional, Politics, 8/10/1998
At the conclusion of meetings of the legal committee affiliated to the Arab League, both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia announced reservations toward an item inserted by Iraq on economic sanctions and their effects on human rights in Arab states.
Moreover they stated that Iraq seeks to involve the legal committee in political affairs. In its recommendations issued Saturday, the committee refused to use human rights as pretext for intervening in Arab states' internal affairs.
Meanwhile the committee called on the international community to deal objectively with human rights and to stay away from discrimination. It also emphasized that human rights in the Islamic countries have a special emphasis because of the Islamic Sharia, while confirming the right of peoples to struggle against occupation in all its forms and shapes.
It considered resisting occupation as not being a terrorist crime, and it called on the whole committee not to breach the commitments resulting from the UN's charter and to respect international legal resolutions.
