Egypt and China unite position toward dumping issue with EU
Egypt-China, Economics, 8/10/1998

The secretary-general of the Egyptian trade chambers, Abdul Sattar Ashra, held a meeting yesterday with a commercial delegation from the Chinese enclave Yohan. A number of businessmen and Egyptian banks' representatives also attended the meeting.

Ashra said that the meeting discussed the possibility of uniting the Egyptian and Chinese positions toward dumping issues and sanctions imposed by the European Union on the textile products for the two countries.

During the meeting, the Egyptian side presented the issue of the financing of Egyptian - Chinese joint projects in Egypt by Egyptian banks. They also discussed special arrangements for the investment and merchandizing of the two countries' products through exhibits.

The volume of exports from the Yohan region to the African countries reaches $30 million, among which Egypt's share is about $2 million.

Meanwhile the secretary general of the Arab - British Trade Chamber, Abdel Karim El-Madrass, called for taking measures against the unjust practices of the European Union countries, especially regarding accusations of dumping against Egyptian products.

The chamber's secretary-general sent a message to British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook in which El-Madrass objected to the practices of the European Commission against Egyptian exports of unbleached cotton, and he referred to the procedure taken by the European Commssion, which contradicts the Barcelona declaration, which seeks to establish a free trade zone between the European Union and the countries of the Mediterranean.

At the end of July, the European Commission approved a decision that would level a tarrif of an average of 12% on imports of unbleached cotton from Egypt and other countries accused of dumping. The decision also establishes a minimum selling price for the cotton from these countries.
