Palestinian calls for courageous US voice before time runs out
Palestine, Politics, 8/7/1998

The permanent Palestinian deputy at the Arab League, Mohammed Sobieh, confirmed that the last round of Palestinian - Israeli negotiations did not achieve any progress, as Israel did not show any flexibility toward the US initiative and presented old ideas already rejected by the Palestinian government and which are not in line with the recent US initiative.

Sobieh said the Palestinian government will evaluate recent communications made with the Israeli government within the context of the US administration's call for talks between the two sides, pointing out that within these evaluations Israel will hold communications with Arab states concerned with this topic to inform them about the recent round of negotiations and consultations and what can be done in the future within the Arab - Palestinian coordination.

Sobieh said the Palestinian side will brief the US administration on the outcome of its communications with Israel, and about the dangers posed by the continuation of this situation as it is.

Sobieh said that the Israeli prime minister "will attempt through deception to show that there is an approach and progress between the two sides," clarifying that Netanyahu is the only one who will benefit from continued talks between Palestine and Israel.

Sobieh also called on the US administration for an immediate and quick intervention and said that the Arab and Palestinian side wants to hear a strong and courageous American voice before the time runs out at last.
