Italy denies that Morocco asked for assistance to accept return of illegal immigrants
Morocco-Italy, Politics, 8/6/1998
Italy denied that Morocco had requested financial assistance to accept back its illegal immigrants.
"The topic of repatriation against funds was never raised by the Moroccan side," Italian Ambassador to Morocco, Guido Martini, told the Italian news agency "Ansa."
Some Italian press reported that Morocco requested Italian economic assistance equivalent to the amount currently negotiated with Tunisia to accept the return of its illegal immigrants. According to Italian press reports, Italy intends to extend Tunisia 150 billion liras for cooperation in fighting illegal immigration.
The Italian Ambassador to Morocco announced that a delegation from the Moroccan Interior Department is expected in Rome for talks with Italian officials on ways to implement the accord on the repatriation of the illegal immigrants.
Morocco and Italy concluded recently in Rabat a cooperation agreement to struggle against clandestine immigration.
Under the accord, the two countries will cooperate in the identification of the Moroccan nationals who enter Italy illegally and in their repatriation at the expenses of the Italian government, Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini had said.
