Tehran for establishing an Islamic Parliamentary Union
Egypt-Iran, Politics, 8/5/1998
Iran's representative office in Cairo on Tuesday said that Iranian parliamentarian and member of the Iranian Shoura council Hijatul Islam Taha Hashami is on a visit to Egypt since Saturday. The office added that the visit aims at establishing an Islamic Parliamentary Union.
The office stated that Hashami held talks on Sunday with the speaker of the Egyptian parliament, Fathi Srour, and delivered him a message from his Iranian counterpart Hijatul Islam Ali Akbar Nateq Nouri. It added that the message pertains to a project aiming at establishing a parliamentary union for the Islamic states.
In recent months, Tehran and Cairo have adopted several initiatives to resume relations which were severed following the launching of the Islamic revolution in 1979.
Egyptian Parliament Speaker Fathi Srour conferred today with the Iranian official. Talks dealt with means of setting up the Islamic Parliamentary Union and bilateral relations between Egypt and Iran.
Following the meeting, Hashami stressed that views between the two sides were identical on various debated regional and international issues. He reiterated Iran's support for the Arab causes, foremost being the realization of full Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories.
