Death penalty for kidnappers in Yemen

A presidential decree issued on Monday in Sanaa said that death penalty will be implemented from now on against kidnappers in Yemen.

The Yemeni News agency Sabaa elaborated that according to the new law everyone who leads a gang of kidnappers, and steals public or private property by means of force will receive the same treatment.

The agency added that anyone who kidnaps a man will be jailed for a period of 12 years and not to exceed 15. A kidnapper of a woman will be jailed for a period not to exceed 25 years. The decree made it clear that anyone who seeks a foreign country or a gang as means to carry out his kidnapping act will be jailed for a period of 10 years but not to exceed 15 years.

A sentence of 10 to 12 years imprisonment will be given to any a person who hijacks a sea, land or air transport means. He will receive the death penalty if the kidnapping results in the death of a person inside or outside the transportation facility.

Yemeni tribes use the process of kidnapping foreigners to exert pressure on the government to fulfill their demands.
