Germany to offer relief aid to Sudan
Sudan-Germany, Economics, 8/5/1998
Germany plans to send relief assistance to Sudan to help the inhabitants of regions facing famine against the backdrop of civil war.
The Kuwaiti news agency "KUNA" quoted a foreign ministry statement as saying that Germany would offer two million Deutsche-Marks to the international program supervising the distribution of food to inhabitants of southern Sudan.
The statement said that Germany would also send two aircrafts to transport the relief supplies and that the Bonn government decided to send medicines and nurses to Sudan in cooperation with German non-government charitable organizations.
As a result of famine and diseases in southern Sudan, the Khartoum government, the opposition Sudan People's Liberation Army and leaders of other factions announced a three-month ceasefire.
