Euro-Mediterranean meeting on immigration to be in Morocco
Morocco-Maghreb, Politics, 8/5/1998
Morocco will host next October a Euro-Mediterranean meeting on the rights of immigrants.
The announcement was made by Moroccan Human Rights Minister, Mohamed Aujjar in an interview with the Moroccan television channel "2M."
"The meeting will provide an opportunity for Euro-Mediterranean dialogue to reflect on the situation of immigrants and their human rights," Aujjar said.
The decision to hold such a meeting coincides with the increasing waves of illegal immigrants arrested almost daily off Spanish and Italian shores.
Aujjar also announced that the Moroccan government created an ad-hoc inter-ministerial commission to settle pending human rights issues.
The Commission, chaired by the Prime Minister, gathers the ministers of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, of the Interior, of Justice, of Relations with the Parliament, of Human Rights and of the Government's General Affairs.
The commission is studying all pending dossiers with a view to settling them within consensus, he said.
