Tourism body headquartered in Rabat
Morocco, Tourism, 8/4/1998
The Euro-Mediterranean Tourism Organization will have its headquarters in the Moroccan capital city of Rabat.
The organization will be established in Rabat under an accord concluded in Rabat on Monday between the Mediterranean body and the Moroccan Tourism Department.
The move materializes the recommendations adopted by the second Euro-Mediterranean ministerial conference on tourism, held in 1995 in the Moroccan financial center of Casablanca.
The Casablanca conference had adopted the Mediterranean tourism charter which revolved around shared development and the safeguard and promotion of the Mare Nostrum.
Head of the Euro-Mediterranean Tourism Organization, Osman Aidi, said during the signing ceremony that the accord crowns the efforts made by the European and Arab countries, especially Morocco, which has always endeavored for the promotion of Euro-Mediterranean partnership.
The Arab countries offer to the Europeans a cultural heritage which can play a crucial role in promoting cooperation between the two banks of the Mediterranean, Aidi said. He also called for the promotion of inter-Arab tourism, which does not exceed 30 percent compared to inter-Asia tourism exchanges which exceed 75 percent.
