El-Fasy: We cannot accept Spanish occupation of Moroccan land
Morocco, Politics, 8/3/1998

Abbase El-Fasy, the secretary general of the Moroccan Independence Party which is a member of Morocco's coalition government, announced the opposition of his country to the continuous Spanish occupation of Sebta and Melila in the north.

He said the issue of the country's unity will remain opened as there are occupied spots, adding that Morocco preferred to hold talk with Spain about the two countries' future and the islands attached to them because Spain is a neighbor and intimate country. But El-Fasy said that it is impossible to accept the continued occupation of Moroccan lands.

Meanwhile there were many recent communications between Moroccan and Spanish officials on this issue, focusing on the call for the negotiations according to a formula that guarantees Moroccan sovereignty over the two cities in return for Spanish economic and trade interest guarantees, but Madrid has not yet launched any negotiations.
