70 Sudanese dying daily due to famine
Sudan, Local, 8/3/1998
Sudanese relief official Hussien El-Abid warned of the aggravation of the miserable situation in Sudan due to the famine there.
El-Abid asserted that about 70 persons are dying daily due to Malaria which has spread among inhabitants who are suffering from famine.
He also said that about 65,000 persons have arrived in Wau city, the largest of Bahr El-Ghazal's cites, in recent weeks to escape from the famine. The Sudanese official added that the main problem obstructing the rescuing operation is the transport of aid, due to the shortage of necessary trains.
El-Abid called on the international community to lift the sanctions imposed upon Sudan, to the enable it to import necessary spare parts to repair the trains.
He accused the southern rebel movement of distributing the aid only among its fighters and not among the area's inhabitants.
