One mine for every person in Kuwait
Kuwait, Politics, 8/3/1998

Documentary studies disclosed yesterday that Kuwait, is the most heavily land mined country in the world when considering its small population. The study said that the mines left by Iraq which amounted to 92.4 mines per kilometer equals 1.1 mine per person.

Land mine victims reached 4,000 civilians where about 1,700 people died with 2,300 injured, 70 percent of them children.

The study, set up by a Kuwaiti research center, said the Iraqi army planted more than two million marine and land mines along the Kuwaiti coastal and land borders and around its economic and petroleum establishments, which causes economic, environmental and social damage whose effect extends for years and requires financing to rehabilitate the environment.
