Israel attacks south Lebanese using internationally-banned weapons
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 8/3/1998

Israeli occupation troops on Sunday shelled Hadatha and al-Teiri towns' woods in south Lebanon using internationally-banned phosphorus shells. Lebanese security sources said the enemy bombardment resulted in fires in the woods of the two towns.

The Israeli forces also bombarded the hills of al-Tuffah district, foremost al-Rafai mountain and Litani river course, as well as Wadi al-Dallafah, Qelya, al-Zaher mount hills and Zamraya - Marj al-Zuhour road in the western Bekaa.

For the fourth successive day, the occupation forces closed Beit Yahoun crossing.

Meanwhile, the US and Australia watch Lebanon organization called for condemning the aggressive policy of the Israeli government and pressuring Israel to withdraw from the occupied Arab lands. The Lebanese national news agency said in a memorandum dispatched to US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and the Australian Foreign Minister the organization stressed that the two countries must adopt the recommendations adopted by the Australian parliamentary delegation during its recent visit to the region during which it condemned the Israeli aggressive policy.

The organization also stressed its condemnation of Israel's violation of human rights and relevant UN norms and charters. It indicated the sufferings of the Lebanese detainees held in Israeli occupation jails and called for freeing them.

The Israeli occupation forces shelled the hilly areas of al-Tuffah district opposite to the occupied part of south Lebanon. Security sources said Israeli artillery positioned in al-Zefatta bombarded Aqmata farm, the woods of Rayhan and Sujoud, the Set Zeinab bridge linking al Tuffayh to al-Nabatieh district, al-Zahrani river course, al-Kafour valley and al-Marbaa locality. The Israeli bombardment was accompanied by heavy machine-gun fire by the Israeli troops targeting mountainous passages.

Meanwhile, Lebanon submitted two complaints to the April Understanding monitoring committee alleging that Israel violated the understanding's provisions which bar tageting or launching attacks from civilian areas.

Two days ago Israel bombarded Barachit town, wounding one civilian. Israel also bombarded Toulin village where a 10-year child was injured and several houses were hit.
