El-Baz: Egypt will move on peace conference soon halt after of negotiations
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 8/3/1998

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt's political advisor, Osama el-Baz on Sunday stressed that President Mubarak is currently making intensive contacts with Arab presidents and kings to convene an Arab summit.

In press statements he made today to reporters in Cairo, el-Baz added that President Mubarak's consultations with the Arab leaders aim at determining the importance of such a summit, its expected results and the proper timing for its convening. He added that good preparations for the summit are the grounds for its success.

El-Baz, asserted last week that the joint initiative of President Mubarak and Chirac will not be an alternative to the Madrid convention, saying, "We have to wait for the end of the current Israeli - Palestinian communications and the point at which they will stop," then he added that there is a period of 10 days after which, "We will watch the American attitude."

After that Egypt is expected to declare the destiny of its initiative, then begin consultations between several international and Arab parties.

El-Baz added that the international conference provided for by the Egyptian - French initiative will not want the Palestinians or Israelis to attend because it is not a conference for negotiations or controversy, confirming that the Egyptian and French presidents have called for a conference to rescue peace.

It is not meant to establish new conditions, but to establish the perception of peace-loving countries all over the world, including the US, Europe, Russia, China, Jordan, Japan, and other countries in Asia, Latin America and the undeveloped countries, said El-Baz

El-Baz said: "We do not need anything from this conference except the enhancement of the previous communications."

He added, "We do not need to maintain Madrid's reference, and we don't want to come out with a new reference because this will give a chance for Israel to escape the unfulfilled aspects in Madrid's convention."
