Algeria protest any intervention in its internal affairs
Algeria-UN, Politics, 7/31/1998

Members of the Algerian national people's council asserted their categorical rejection of any intervention in the internal affairs of the country under the pretext of a political or humanitarian umbrella.

They denounced attempts made to undermine state institutions. The parliamentarians collected signatures representing various political parties inside the council to issue a statement denouncing any such intervention. This coincides with the visit of the UN teams to the parliament's headquarters.

In an indirect message to the UN team, the National Liberation Front Party, which ruled Algeria for 30 years, expressed its opposition to any attempt aimed at undermining peoples' and states' sovereignty and any intervention in the internal affairs of Algeria regardless to its nature and source.

It warned against the UN information team's visit becoming an investigation visit through its contacts with various social strata and the type of questions its members ask.

On Wednesday the UN group met with both the chairman of the Nation's Council, Bashir Bu Meza, and chairman of the National People's Council, Abdul Qader Bin Saleh. Questions put by members of the UN team centered on the need to implement the content of legal texts in order to protect human rights.

On Thursday, the UN team headed for Telmesan, 650 km west of the Algerian capital in order to inspect areas exposed to terrorist attacks.
