One Israeli soldier killed in south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 7/31/1998

The Israeli occupation forces Thursday hit civilian areas adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon. Lebanese security sources said Israeli artillery Thursday morning bombarded Hadatha - Haris road. The bombardment damaged the houses of Lebanese citizens Hassan Daqiq and his son Miri.

The bombardment also targeted the outskirts of Hadatha and Kafra towns. Earlier in the day the Israeli occupation troops fired shells at al-Zahrani river course in al-Tuffah district.

Israeli artillery also fired on areas of Shakra town, Burket Naqiyeh and al-Salawqi valley. The Israeli bombardment coincided with intensive mopping-up operations with heavy machine-gun fire against targeted areas.

In retaliation, the Lebanese national resistance on Thursday attacked a joint position of Israeli and allied South Lebanon Army troops in Reshaf inside the occupied part of south Lebanon.

In a statement, the resistance said its fighters clashed with the occupants of the position for 20 minutes during which they scored direct hits.

Another Lebanese group monitored Israeli military movements inside al-Shaqif castle. The castle was then attacked, and direct hits were observed. Israeli sources admitted that one soldier was killed and another wounded as a result of the attack.
