Anxiety over King Hussein's health causes currency pressure
Jordan, Economics, 7/31/1998
The US dollar has viewed a sharp rise in Jordan, where hundreds of Jordanians began to change Jordanian dinars into dollars, due to their anxiety over the health of the Jordanian monarch, King Hussein.
Reports questioned the health of King Hussein as newspapers have extensively covered his health.
Formally, the Jordanian government in 1995 fixed the value of the Jordanian dinar for selling at 0.710 per dollar, and 0.708 per dollar for buying.
Yet sources denied that there are other reasons for the rise in the value of the dollar, saying that there is a hysterical movement for buying dollars, although circumstances do not justify this concern. The Crown Prince of Jordan visited the Maan area most recently and reassured citizens of the government's role in addressing their concern. The city of Maan had been a volatile region of the country where anti-government riots had taken place in the past.
King Hussein is currently undergoing treatment for Lymphoma at the Mayo Clinic in the US, and his doctors say that his condition is curable.
