Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreement details
Saudi Arabia-Yemen, Politics, 7/30/1998
Saudi Arabia and Yemen have agreed to resume the meetings of three joint committees to carry on demarcating joint land and sea border lines.
Saudi Press Agency reported that according to the agreement, signed by the two countries' foreign ministers on Tuesday, the military committee will hold the first meeting on August 4 to maintain the status quo on the disputed Red Sea island of Al-Duwaimah in line with an agreement reached by the two sides last week.
Saudi and Yemen forces stationed on the Island engaged in clashes on July 19.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal, during a brief visit to Sanaa Tuesday, signed the agreement with his Yemeni counterpart, Abdel Qader Bajmal. The agreement also stipulates that the two sides would stage joint patrols on the contested islands.
The joint security measure is in line with the Saudi-Yemeni memorandum of understanding, drawn up by Sanaa and Yemen in 1995 to resolve the border dispute.
A Saudi-Yemeni committee in charge of marking the border points will hold a meeting within two months to re-draw some marks in the eastern area of Jabal Al-Thar and the western Red Sea area of Ras Al-Muwej.
The agreement calls for holding a meeting in three months of the joint commission entrusted with marking the sea border points.
The two sides pledged that they would refrain from taking any measure that may change the status quo along the border points.
Saudi Arabia and Yemen have been engaged in disputes on border demarcation since the 1930s, the two states signed a memorandum of understanding in 1995, according to which several joint committees were set up to tackle the problems.
