Morocco-USA, Health, 7/30/1998

A team of 42 US volunteer surgeons will be staying in Morocco this July 29 through August 12 to perform operations on children suffering from congenital face malformations, acute burning scars or harelip.

The medical team's visit is part of the "Smile" operation initiated by US plastic surgery specialist William P. Magee and his wife Kathy. It is supported by the Moroccan health ministry, Hilton hotel in Rabat, the US embassy, Moroccan carrier "Royal Air Maroc," "Citibank Maghreb," the Rabat branch of "Rotary Club" and Price Waterhouse.

The medical team comprises surgeons, anesthetists, speech therapists, nurses, pediatricians and dentists who will be assisted by Moroccan peers.

The humanitarian "Smile" operation has conducted 43,000 operations in developing countries. This year, it intends to perform surgery on 5,000 children in several countries, including Morocco.
