Syrian FM urges Arab, Muslim states to halt normalization with Israel
Syria, Politics, 7/30/1998
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa discussed with his Nigerien counterpart Maman Sidi Ku current conditions in the Middle East and African matters.
In statements to reporters following the meeting, al-Sharaa criticized the Israeli practices in the occupied Arab territories, especially against Jerusalem which he said are aimed at changing the holy Arab city into a small quarter of a big Jewish Jerusalem so as to abrogate the history of this time-honored city.
Al-Sharaa added: "Arab states are called upon to make decisive and wise decisions confronting the current state of affairs and assuring that dealing with Israel under such a state is not possible." He added that Jerusalem committee meeting chaired by King Hassan II would "yield desirable outcomes," elaborating that any joint Arab action would be a warning to Israel that its policy is totally unacceptable and the current conditions are rejected.
On a question whether the Islamic countries support Syria's stances, the Syrian FM said: "Views are exchanged with our brothers. We think our viewpoint is acceptable to those brothers in the Arab countries and Muslim states." He stressed the importance of abiding by Arab and Islamic resolutions pertinent to ceasing normalization with Israel and freezing ties with it.
"It is exclusively Israel which gave up obligations with the Palestinians, the Syrians and all Arabs in terms of the Middle East peace process," the FM indicated.
