African efforts to solve dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia
Eritrea-Ethiopia-OAU, Politics, 7/29/1998
African sources told ArabicNews.com that the African mediation committee comprised of Djibouti, Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso will hold a meeting in the capital city of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso at the end of the current month on the level of ambassadors. That meeting will be followed in August by a meeting between the three states' foreign ministers, to find a peaceful solution for the border crisis between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The secretary-general of the Organization of African Unity, Salem Ahmed Salem, and the president of Borkina Faso, who is also (the head of the OAU's current session, Blaise Compaore will head the ministerial meeting.
Salem said that the African mediation is still abiding by the US - Rawandan suggestions, yet it knows well that Eritrea opposes this mediation even after withdrawing from it. The African sources referred to communications between UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, which aims at uniting the efforts to find a peaceful and quick solution to the crisis.
Meanwhile the supervisor in the region did not rule out the failure of the new African initiative, because Eritrea is strongly adhering to its refusal to withdraw from the contested regions, and Ethiopia continues to insist on this withdrawal and refuse negotiations before it the withdrawal's implementation.
