Sudanese opposition refuses to participate in national government
Sudan, Politics, 7/29/1998
The opposition Democratic National Assembly inside Sudan announced its refusal to participate in the national government as called for by some Islamic factions affiliated to the government.
A prominent leader in the assembly and in the Democratic Union Party, lawyer Ali Mahmoud Hassanein said that a real solution between the government and its opposition can only come through the government's reconciliation with the parties, convening a constitutional conference in the attendance of all the political parties to discuss all Sudanese issues, forming a transitional government to implement a known program puts the military under civilian control, civil corporations, and justice bodies as well as holding free, legitimate elections that bring a national parliament that forms a new government.
Hassanein severely criticized continuing the government's prohibition of political parties' activities in spite the new constitution, which removed this prohibition.
