Progress in Saudi -Yemeni dispute as joint committees are activated
Yemen-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 7/29/1998
A Saudi delegation led by Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal and a Yemeni delegation headed by Foreign Minister Abdul Qader Bajmal on Tuesday signed the minutes of a meeting aiming to stimulate the activities of the joint committees from both sides.
The committees will be in charge of working out joint solutions for border issues between Yemen and Saudi Arabia. News reports said the signing of the minutes revealed the two states determination to overcome their difficulties and to settle border disputes by dialogue.
Yemeni sources told ArabicNews.com that Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreed upon forming the committee to prevent any tension or problems that could take place on the borders between the two states in the future.
The sources added that the instructions to the committee confirmed the necessity of solving the issues of security, border demarcation, economic and political relations through cooperation and peaceful understanding within the context of the Tiaf convention.
The agreement was confirmed by Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh during his reception on Tuesday evening with the Saudi FM. The Yemeni President also underlined the importance of continued contacts between the two countries.
During the meeting, President Saleh received a message from Saudi King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz and from Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah pertaining to border issues. It was delivered by Prince al-Faisal.
The Saudi minister, who left Sanaa after his meeting with the Yemeni president, had earlier arrived in the Yemeni capital and held talks with his Yemeni counterpart Bajmal.
