No disputes between Syria, Egypt over US role

Egypt's Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said that the Egyptian - French initiative was discussed during the talks between President Hafez al-Assad and President Hosni Mubarak in Alexandria on Sunday.

In pre-departure statements to Paris, Moussa added that his talks with French officials will center on the grave situation the Middle East peace process has reached and the French - Egyptian initiative for a international peace conference.

On the other hand, the Egyptian ambassador in Damascus, Mahmoud Ali Shukri, denied replying to a question put by Monte Carlo radio any dispute between Damascus and Cairo over the US role, according to what had been earlier reported by an Arab daily.

Shukri added that the identical views shared by the two states are based on strategic conception toward the peace process, adding that no disputes exist toward the US role or toward other issues.

On the different views held by Presidents al-Assad and Mubarak towards the peace conference based on the Egyptian-French initiative, the ambassador said it is not a matter of dispute, adding that it is not sorted out yet. He indicated that Egypt's Foreign Minister Amr Moussa will discuss matters pertaining to this conference today in Paris.

He added that Moussa will discuss with his Syrian counterpart Farouk al Sharaa the same issue during their meeting on July 28 in Rabat.
