Algeria, Politics, 7/27/1998
Algerian security sources said on Sunday that an armed group killed on Saturday night 12 citizens and wounded two others. A security source said the new massacre was committed in Telmesan province to the far west of Algeria.
Another statement by the Algerian security forces said the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) killed on Saturday night eight citizens in Sidi Abdul Mumen district in Saeeda province. The statement said that security forces immediately started mopping up operations in the area to arrest the killers.
Meanwhile, Algerian security forces killed more 60 gunmen from the GIA during a large military operation launched in Tezi Ozo province. The Algerian daily al-Ahrar issued on Sunday said the numbers of gunmen killed may increase because mopping up operations still continue, noting that the government forces used heavy weapons.
Al-Khabar daily added that security forces had dismantled two explosive charges. One in a cafe in the downtown of Telmesan city and the second in al-Keifan suburb in the capital, Algiers.
