Libya praises relations with Italy

Assistant secretary of the Libyan Foreign Relations Bureau, Abdul Ati al-Obeidi, on Friday praised the Italian government, which has been successful in eliminating years of uncertainty between the two countries.

He added that the agreement signed between the two countries last month would be of great economic benefit to the two sides. Interviewed by the Italian daily Curiri Della Seira published today, al-Obeidi said the agreement includes an article which states "non exchanged oddity " which means that the NATO and the US are not permitted to used Italian air bases in any attacks against Libya.

He added that according to the agreement Italy had agreed to prevent the use of its air bases in case an attack takes place against Libya. He added that the Americans tried to prevent the agreement between his country and Italy.

Countries of the European Union, he added, had positive reactions to the agreement. He noted the keenness of each country of the European Union to restore normal relations with Libya and to settle the Lockerbie question in a "just way."
