Egyptian cinema personalities shun Israeli theatrical show in Cairo
Egypt, Culture, 7/25/1998
Egyptian artists boycotted a theatrical show held by the Israeli Academic Center in Cairo, refusing to accept the invitations of Israeli theater director Sivi Peter and the actor Yonattan Shershi.
Peter's work was a documentary film that included parts of dramatic works that dealt with the situation of Israeli captives during 1933 - 1947, and disconformity between the Palestinian families and the British occupation.
The second part of the film tackled the problems from which the new settlers are suffering, their inability to integrate with Israeli society and the bad treatment they receive.
The Israeli actor Yonattan Shershi - who is descended from an Irish origin - said that he personally suffered for years from the mistreatment of the "original citizens" who feel that all the comers are intruders.
The head of the festival, Hussein Fahmi, refused an Israeli invitation to participate in the Cairo festival and he said, "As long as Israel is going on in occupying the Arab lands, we will not permit it to participate in our festival."
