Hariri for cohesion of Syrian, Lebanese tracks

Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has stressed the need for continued cohesion between the Syrian and Lebanese tracks so as to serve common interests between the two countries.

In a statement to the Egyptian daily al-Ahram issued today, Hariri said it is not possible to think of dismembering the Syrian and Lebanese tracks. He added that the two countries' territories and relations are mingled and interrelated. Separating the two tracks does not serve either of the two sides, he said.

Hariri called upon Israel to realize that genuine peace can be only attained through its withdrawal from the Golan and south Lebanon and the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Arabs.

He underlined the importance of mobilizing Arab and international efforts to exert pressure on Israel to proceed in the peace process, according to the Madrid formula and the land for peace principle. He also called for Israel's unconditional withdrawal from the occupied part of south Lebanon.

Hariri stressed that the Lebanese government is responsible for protecting its lands before the Lebanese Parliament, rather than before Israel. He warned that Israeli policy and Israel's oppressive practices in violation of international legitimacy resolutions will lead to tension, violence and insecurity in the region.

He stressed that Lebanon has made a strong return to the world's political and economic map, adding that Lebanon is now able to shoulder its responsibilities.
