Israeli Knesset moves toward perpetuating occupation of Golan, Jerusalem
Israel, Politics, 7/24/1998

The Israeli Knesset on Wednesday gave preliminary ratification to a project which would make any Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem significantly more difficult.

Some 65 Knesset members voted for the draft project proposed by a Knesset member from the Third Way movement, allied with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's government.

The draft project, which passed through the first of four readings necessary to win final approval, would require the Israeli government to put any such withdrawal to a public referendum and Knesset vote before any withdrawal from an area under Israeli law, the Jerusalem Post reported.

This would include the occupied Syrian Golan Heights which was annexed by Israel in 1981 and occupied Jerusalem which Israel annexed following the June war of 1967.

For his part Meretz Party chairman Yossi Sarid had criticized supporters of the Israeli draft project which stands against the peace process. He stressed adopting this decision, the Israeli Knesset has placed a new obstacle before reaching peace in the region.
