Egyptian mufti confirms to US ambassador: no religious persecution in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 7/24/1998

Egypt's mufti confirmed to the US ambassador in Cairo that there is no religious persecution in Egypt.

Nasr Farid Wasel, the Egyptian mufti, met with the US ambassador in Cairo, Daniel Kurtzer, who dismissed questions about religious persecution of Copts in Egypt, saying, "It's just a fabrication and falsity which has nothing to do with truth."

Moreover the mufti told the ambassador that all those who conveyed these fabrications, aimed at ending peace and creating conflicts between people, adding that, "From Egypt we are confirming that there is not any persecution as it is claimed in any way."

Farid Wasel emphasized that Egyptian Moslems deal with their Egyptian Christians with love and loyalty, saying: "We are the believers of a divine creed, and our Islamic faith commands us by this, and who denies this has to come to Egypt to viewing the facts."

He also stated that Islam calls for moderation in all matters of life where Egypt gathers all creeds in one crucible.

He said that accusing Islam of violence and terrorism is a false accusation, it is against the Islamic legislation, except in defense of oneself, nation and repulsion of invasions.
