AL: Security cannot be realized under occupation
Regional, Politics, 7/24/1998
Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid has stressed that the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is creating obstacles which obstruct the Middle East peace process, escalating tensions in the region due to its intransigent policies.
In statements to reporters, Abdul Meguid, currently on an official visit to Poland, was quoted as saying, "We want the Americans to play the role of honest broker in the Middle East peace process."
He added, "We want to see a clear evidence on that the US is deeply involved in the Middle East peace process." He called upon Washington to carry out a greater direct role in the talks.
The US has taken a hands-off approach of late in the Palestinian-Israeli talks insisting that the two sides deal with their problems face-to-face. These talks are not progressing and there are indications that they have stalled as the Israelis are refusing to accept the US proposal already accepted by the Palestinians.
Abdul Meguid also expressed hope that Israeli officials will recognize that the best security is that which does not embark on occupying lands. "Occupation only leads to escalated conditions in the region," he said.
