UN investigates Israeli practices in occupied territories

The United Nations' Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories is investigating Israeli practices in occupied territories from July 22-31.
The members of the committee intend to convene with high-ranking officials in Egypt, Jordan and Syria during their visit to discuss Israeli practices toward the Palestinian people. Israel has refused since 1968, when the committee was established, to cooperate with the committee or provide access to the occupied territories.
The committee compiles reports to the UN General Assembly from press reports out of Israel and the occupied territories as well as from testimony from persons with recent experiences of the human rights situation in the territories.
The information center for the U.N in Cairo said in a statement that The committee includes three envoys from international organization, headed by ambassador John de Saram from Sri Lanka. The committee also includes Sengal's representative to the UN, Absa Claude Diallo and Malaysian ambassador- at-large Abdul Majid Mohamed.
The committee is holding talks in Egypt from July 23-25, in Amman from July 26-28, and in Syria on July 29-30. In Jordan, the committee is to interview Palestinians from the West Bank at the King Hussein Bridge. The committee's mandate includes the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Syrian Golan Heights.
