Yemen, Saudi Arabia seek calmness
Saudi Arabia-Yemen, Politics, 7/22/1998
Both Yemen and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday sought to halt the escalation over their border disputes which led to the deaths of three Yemenis and the wounding of another nine from the border guards in al-Duweimeh Island under disputes between the two countries.
A high-ranking Yemeni official told reporters in Sanaa that the Yemeni deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Abdul Qader Bajmal will head tomorrow for Saudi Arabia in an attempt to calm the crisis.
In Jeddah, Saudi Minister of the Interior Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz said on Monday night that the Saudi troops that took the island from the Yemenis killed three Yemenis and captured a fourth in a state of self-defense. He accused Yemeni troops of getting into the island in the middle of last June. But he stressed that this incident will not undermine Riyadh's desire to settle border disputes as well as the situation of the Yemenis residing in Saudi Arabia. He said that Saudi Arabia does not want to resort to arbitration, SANA reported.
The Saudi prince stated the area of the island is 6 square km: "Two thirds of the island is along the Saudi coast and the other one third is along the Yemeni coast."
