Arab League urges Israel to join Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
Regional-Israel, Politics, 7/22/1998

The Arab League [AL] on Tuesday urged the international community to pressure Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to put all its nuclear installations under control of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The official in charge of the area of weapons of mass destruction at the AL, Muhammad Zakaraya Ismael, said in its extraordinary meeting, the committee discussed a Palestinian memorandum on the Israeli act of dumping radioactive and toxic nuclear waste in the Mediterranean waters and the Gulf of Aqaba.

The official did not give more details about the Israeli operations, but added that these Israeli acts threaten Arab national security, the environment as well as states overlooking the Mediterranean.

The committee proposed, in a draft Arab resolution to be passed at the IAEA meeting next September, that all States should not supply Israel with any materials or assistance "until it subjects its nuclear installations" to IAEA inspection, Map reported.

Ismael said that the committee will warn the Mediterranean - European partnership countries about the Israeli international violations and the need to put the Israeli nuclear activity as a permanent item at the agenda of the Arab information ministers' meeting.
