Arab League approves ratification of basic system for international criminal court
Regional-UN, Politics, 7/21/1998
Esmat Abdul Meguid, the Arab League's secretary-general, expressed his approval of the vote in which a great majority of the world's countries ratified the basic system for an international criminal court.
Abdul Meguid described the vote as a result of continuous international efforts to support the current international judicial system by establishing principles of international criminal justice and applying rules of international humanitarian law among all countries and peoples without differentiation or distinction.
He added that in the past war crimes have passed without punishment, referring to the continuous Israeli violations of the Geneva conventions which should protect civilians in the occupied Arab territories.
Abdul Meguid praised the basic system laid down for the court, including considering Israeli settlements in the occupied Arab lands as war crimes, and he expressed his hope that the international criminal court may practice its role as an effective and independent international judicial body that deals with applying international humanitarian law in relations between all peoples and countries.
