Regional, Education, 7/21/1998

The Directors General of the Rabat-based ISESCO and the Paris-based UNESCO signed in Paris minutes defining joint cooperation activities, said a statement from ISESCO, a body of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).

Featuring a number of special educational programmes for Somalia, Bosnia and Palestine, the minutes also include relief programs for homeless children and youngsters to provide these people with educational protection through appropriate training programs and intensive care in order to improve their conditions.

The two organizations agreed, likewise, to co-sponsor a number of international conferences, such as the World Conference on higher Education, scheduled in Paris by the end of 1998, and the International Arab Conference on Solar Energy.

Other activities retained in the minutes concern holding training sessions for supervisors of Koranic schools in Muslim countries, the preparation of textbooks, the joint conducting of educational studies, the preservation of manuscripts, the training of museum staff in addition to several other activities and programmes pertaining to handicrafts, girls' and women's education, translation and printing of books, use of Arabic in literacy programmes, and the setting up of an electronic library for the blind, Map reported.

The ISESCO/UNESCO joint committee held a meeting last March in Paris during which it looked into joint programs and activities for the coming two years.
