Israeli nuclear activity under discussion at Arab League

The Arab League committee in charge of following up on Israeli nuclear activity started deliberations in Cairo on Monday.

Heads of atomic energy commissions, military experts and specialists in the nuclear field from the Arab states are taking part in the committee's meetings. Committee chairman Fathi Mirei said that during the two-day meetings the participants will discuss means of confronting the nuclear danger threatening the Middle East, represented by Israel's possession of nuclear arms.

He added that the committee discussed Israel dumping or throwing radioactive and toxic nuclear waste in the Mediterranean water, a matter which threatens the environment of the whole Middle East region, all the Arab states and the European countries overlooking the Mediterranean.

Mirei called for confronting Israeli refusal to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and to pressure it to submit its nuclear installations to international inspection.

The official for nuclear issues the Arab League, Mohamed El-Fatteh El-Naseri, told ArabicNews.com that the Arab ambassadors' council in Vienna inserted an article about the Israeli nuclear program on the agenda of the general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency during the IAEA meeting in September.

Moreover the Arab group will present a draft resolution about the agency's project to call on all the region's countries to establish a zone free of nuclear weapons in the Middle East.
