Destroyer of books on Islam needs more punishment says group
Regional-France, Religion, 7/20/1998
The Movement Against Racism and for Friendship Between Peoples (MRAP) deemed the suspension imposed against the French librarian who used to deliberately destroy books on Islam and the Arab world in a municipal library in Paris, as insufficient and not "up to this serious mistake."
The librarian used to borrow the books under forged readers' cards bearing Arabic names, and the books were never returned. After the library keeper discovered these "disappearances," an investigation was conducted and the librarian was caught red-handed. The disciplinary council of the Paris administration sentenced him to a two year suspension.
The MRAP, which believes that the serious deeds deserved the dismissal of the offender, addressed Paris City Hall to learn whether it was planning to lodge a complaint for theft, destruction and forgery against the culprit.
The Paris mayor's assistant, Claude-Annick Tissot, had described the deed as "a racism act" and as "a very serious and inadmissible" mistake. "In such cases of failure to properly shoulder one's responsibility, I request dismissal," she said, Map reported..
