France fully supports Morocco, says French prime minister
Morocco-France, Politics, 7/20/1998

French prime minister, Lionel Jospin, voiced his country's full support for Morocco in a spirit of "renewed partnership," in a message he sent to his Moroccan peer, Abderrahmane Youssoufi.

Chairman of the foreign affairs committee at the French parliament, Jack Lang, who is visiting Morocco, conveyed Jospin's support message to Youssoufi during a meeting at the end of last week in Rabat.

The message that was carried on Sunday by the Moroccan daily "Al Ittihad Al Ichtiraki," stressed that Lang's visit is evidence of the permanent interest that both the French government and all the representatives of the French nation grant to the fate of Morocco, Map reported.

"H.M. King Hassan II has ushered in a political change process to which all the French pay tribute," the message stressed, adding that the modernization of the Moroccan economy that "France and the European Union will assist in every possible way is a vital stake for which your government is resolutely endeavoring."

According to the daily, talks between the French official and the Moroccan prime minister covered preparations for Youssoufi's visit to France next October to take part in the French - Moroccan economic commission.

Lang, who started Friday a "friendship" visit to Morocco at the invitation of speaker of the Moroccan house of representatives, also conveyed to the prime minister another message from French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine.

Lang reviewed Saturday with Moroccan Economy and Finance Minister Fathallah Oualalou bilateral relations in the economic, financial, cultural and emigration fields. They also surveyed means of boosting French investment in Morocco and how to handle the Moroccan debt owed to France, mainly by reconverting the amounts due into investments.

The two officials also debated Moroccan partnership with the European Union and stressed the important part of France in developing the Kingdom's relations with the Union.
