Spanish company services new ferry boat to Morocco
Morocco-Spain, Economics, 7/18/1998
A Spanish private company will service next week a new ferry boat with a capacity of 1,000 passengers and 350 vehicles between southern Spain and the Moroccan occupied city of Melilia, in the north.
The new boat will alleviate the load of Moroccans living in Europe who come home for summer holidays. It will make three daily trips between the two Spanish southern cities of Almeria and Malaga to Melilia until the end of the "transit operation" by mid-September.
The Moroccan community living in Madrid alone is estimated at 17,000 persons, accounting for 34.9 percent of the foreign community in the Spanish capital.
The association of solidarity with immigrant workers said the Moroccans living in Madrid, including persons who are still waiting for official work and stay documents, is the largest foreign community in Madrid, followed by Argentineans (7,000 persons), Peruvians (5,400), nationals of the Dominican Republic (4,400) and the Chinese (4,000).
