Sudan, Politics, 7/18/1998
A committee authorized to assess the volume of losses due to fighting in al-Wahda state in southern Sudan has set up a report on the results of the fighting between southern rebel factions and Sudanese government forces, saying the conflict led to extreme harm in Lyr, where 49 persons were killed in these events.
The minister of human affairs in the south council, James Mayora, said that the damages were great, including the destruction of a market, a center for treating tuberculosis and nutrition centers as well as the burning of 60% to 70% of the city.
He added that the number of houses, trade centers and cow pens that were burned reached 5,411 while the 49 persons who were killed included children and women.
He said that the committee's recommendations called for the quick formation of a military - technical joint committee to begin urgent communications with the disputing parties and called on Ryak Meshar (the Sudanese vice president in the south) to form a fact-finding committee to look into these events in order to identify those responsible and secure the return of stolen cows and money.
