Sudan demands that Cairo return Sudanese opposition
Sudan, Politics, 7/17/1998
Sudan called on Cairo to hand over the secretary-general of the Arab Lawyers Union and Sudanese opposition members.
An official in the ruling party in Sudan confirmed that Khartoum has demanded that Cairo hand over a member of the opposition leadership and secretary-general of the Arab Lawyers Union, Farouk Abu Eissa, so he can be tried for involvement in recent explosions in Khartoum.
In a march held by the Public Union for Sudanese Women, to denounce the explosions that look place on the evening of the anniversary celebrations of the rise of the current Sudanese government in Khartoum, Motesem Abdul Rahim said that the government presented a request through diplomatic channels to receive Abu Eissa, yet the popular forces will not wait for diplomatic reactions, but will launch demonstrations to demand the extradition of those involved in the attempt.
Opposition leaders denied that their parties have any relation to the explosions, as the leader of the opposing Nation's Party, El-Sadek El-Mahdi, who is also accused of being involved in the explosions, said that all the parties are innocent and that no opposition member can be involved in actions that would harm facilities owned by the people.
He said the government is responsible for these explosions, after it failed in carrying out internal reforms and to enable it to take suppressive steps against the opposition, continue the emergency law and not apply the new constitution.
