Arab Parliamentarians to convene in Beirut on the occasion of Qana massacre

Secretary general of the Arab Parliamentary Union (APU), Noureddine Bouchkouj (Morocco), conferred on Tuesday in Beirut with the speaker of the Lebanese parliament on the possibility of convening the coming session of the APU's council in the Lebanese capital.

Bouchkouj told reporters after the meeting that speakers from several Arab parliaments expressed the wish that this session coincide with the commemoration of the Qana massacre.

About one hundred Lebanese civilians were killed by Israeli shelling during the operation called the Grapes of Wrath launched in April 1996 by Israel against Hizbullah in Lebanon.

The speakers also wish to visit southern Lebanon, to voice solidarity with this country's struggle to retrieve its occupied territories, the APU secretary-general said.

He said the council's coming session will discuss the creation of a unified Arab parliament and the setting up of a common Arab market, Map reported.

Speakers of Arab parliaments visited Qana in May 1996 where they held the closing session of the 27th session of the APU council that convened its opening meetings in Damascus.
