Arafat relieved by his talks in Beijing
Palestine-China, Politics, 7/15/1998

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat continued his talks in Beijing amid optimistic assessments by top Palestinian officials that China would play a more effective role in the peace process.

Arafat, his aides said, was very happy at the state reception that awaited him in Beijing and at the firm commitment by which the Chinese leaders expressed support of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian demand for statehood.

Arafat briefed Chinese leaders on the effects of the Israeli closure policy and siege that has caused serious deterioration in the Palestinian economy. He expressed hopes that China would contribute in the form of business deals and contracts, to the process of nourishing the Palestinian economy.

President Arafat blamed the Israeli government not only for ignoring the signed agreements but also for trying to change them and renegotiate the peace process all over again.
