Egypt threatens to halt efforts in Somalia
Egypt-Somalia, Politics, 7/15/1998

Tripoli has briefed Cairo on the outcome of the talks the Libyan leadership held during the past week with Somali leaders Ali Mahdi, Hussein Mohammed Aideed and Othman Atto to urge them to implement the Cairo declaration for reconciliation.

The three leaders have not returned to Cairo since they left the city after signing the declaration in December of last year.

An Egyptian diplomatic source said that the possibility of returning Somalia to its normalcy revolve around the Somalis themselves and their disputes around certain interests.

The source said that Egypt may halt its efforts to reach Somali reconciliation with these leaders, saying that it is hard to continue the effort without any progress.

The source said that the three leaders have not proved any good intentions yet to establish security and peace in the Somali capital, Makadishu.
