EU's intensive efforts for signing peace accord in Sudan
Sudan-European Union, Politics, 7/15/1998
The European Union is currently making intensive efforts to reach a peace accord in Sudan.
These efforts are culminated in dispatching its high-ranking officials to the region to explore means of achieving reconciliation providing for restoring peace and security to southern Sudan.
A statement by the British Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that British minister of state for Middle East affairs Derek Fatchett arrived in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on Monday on an EU mission to the region. The statements added that during his four-day visit, Fatchett seeks to convince the Sudanese government and the rebels in the south to sign a truce leading to a peace accord.
The statement added that Fatchett, who will also visit Khartoum, will try to get guarantees to safeguard humanitarian aid to the victims of starvation in south Sudan. The statement added that the main humanitarian task for the British minister lies in achieving a temporary cease-fire and ensuring safe passage for aid supplies to deal with the starvation conditions in the south.
